Oh for the love of sewing! An Easter Bunny, some cute pincushions, a dress and a neon pompom loop scarf

Hello again!

I mentioned previously how much I loved watching The Great British Sewing Bee! I found it so inspiring!

At Easter we went to England to visit my family. I came back with a huge load of craft magazines. In one of the Mollie makes magazines I found an adorable Easter Bunny made from felt. I decided that I just had to sew one myself! I made mine smaller than in the instructions (basically the same size as the .pdf printout).

Some cute little pincushions

This was another project I always wanted to try out. I used a jam jar lid as a template to cut out 2 fabric circles that I sewed together. I stuffed them with the cut off ends collected from various finished projects, a great way to recycle yarn ends! (Incidentally, I also used them to stuff the bunny!) Then I sewed some embroidery thread through the middle several times and cinched it tight! I added a pretty button to finish it off! I made some smaller versions as brooches!

My first dress

On monday afternoon after finishing my Minty Shawl, I decided that I wanted to have a go at dressmaking! I took a basic T-Shirt Dress and used this as a template. I spent half the afternoon on the floor! Cleo was my helper!!! I didn't like the outside of the fabric, I preferred the plain side which looks more woven. I managed to find this large piece of material (2x2m) in one of the charity shops (Kringwinkel). It was a bargain at 3 Euro!

By the evening my first ever dress was finished and ready to wear. It feels incredibly comfortable and is lovely to wear in this spring weather. I made it very long, it's a sleeveless Maxi Dress!

A Neon Pompom Loop Scarf

Yesterday I did another sewing project - A loop scarf. I had bought a remnant piece of material in England in Aqua  Blue with thin Coral Red Orange Stripes. I cut it in half and attached the two pieces lengthways.

Adding the pompom trim (2m long bought at Veritas), proved to be a challenge, I needed to take the sewing foot off! Overall I'm very happy with another funkycrochet original! It's nice to know that I made it myself and nobody else will have an identical piece!

I loved the colourful threads

Here are some photos of my combined efforts!

Hope you had fun reading this post! I just saw it will be my 50th blog post, woohoo!!!

Do you sew? What was your first ever make? Looking forward to reading your comments!

  6. The bunny is soooo adorable! I love it!!!

Man, I really need to learn to sew (or rather to refresh my knowledge. I learnt the basics in school lots of years back...)

    Take care

    1. Hehe, Mere! I'm still a learner (self taught), but what I lack in skills I got in ideas and enthusiasm... my sewing is by no means perfect and the seams are not always straight, but I do my best! I'm sure your skills are not so bad at all, a lot comes from trial and error! Don't give up!!! Hugs!!! xx

  10. Haha, i don't sew at all... Groetjes

  13. Well done on making your first dress. It looks great and especially with the scarf you made. I used to do more dress making but not much recently. I prefer knitting or crocheting.

  14. G'day Ingrid,
I do love your series titles "Oh for the love of ..."
As for sewing, I do sew and enjoy it but it isn't the most accessible craft for someone with limited energy. Most of my sewing energy gets used up on mending but I also make pajamas for the family because I don't want to pay the crazy prices in the shops for a pair of pajamas - many are more expensive than outerwear!
We are both motivated by the same factor - being able to wear one-of-a-kind pieces that cannot be found elsewhere. We can express our unique style through our crafts.
Congratulations on your first dress and the accessories go so well with it too. It is amazing how quickly you have been able to put together the entire ensemble from your own hands.
    Cheers :-)

  15. Hello ingrid,
I haven't been to blogland for such a long time so I had to catch up on your blog what you have been doing the last couple of weeks. And wow! you've been so creative! I love your red shawl and the minty one of course and that you started sewing is amazing! I used to sew more when I had no children but nowadays I just have not enough time to sew. You need at least 2 or 3 hours at a time to get something done and I just don't have that much time. Maybe later when the children left home... Hope you have a nice Sunday, Viola

    1. Dear Viola! Another apology to you as well, I'm happy that you found it inspiring! Some things can be sewn though in quite a short time, so don't let lack of time put you off. Just start with simple projects, such as a placemat or little pouch or bag.... Good luck!!! xx
