A knitted hat, cowl and fingerless gloves plus a walk along the river Dijle

Hello my friends,

Hope you had a good week? I've been very busy, my oldest daughter is still visiting and we are often out and about!

I also like to welcome my latest readers, thanks for joining and following my blog, I hope you like it here! :)

First some new makes. My daughter asked me for some handmade winter woollies to keep her warm. I was only too happy to oblige!

My latest knits (all made with Rico yarns): a fitted hat, a cosy cowl and some wristwarmers/fingerless gloves!

Fingerless gloves/Wristwarmers - finished late December 2014

A long family walk

On Sunday we went for a very long walk along the river Dijle which meanders and is also surrounded by wetlands. There are some very small villages and farms. The initial plan was to walk 8.5km, however we probably did about 10km since one of the planned paths was flooded! There was no way we could have passed through on foot. As it was, the ground was very soggy and muddy in the majority of our route, so we ended up with very muddy shoes and trousers!

Here are some highlights from our long walk!

Wrapped up warm against the cold!
 Forest Trees against the sky
Coming out of the woods we walked along country paths
I was surprised to see some young lambs in January!

Sheep grazing at an organic fruit farm
We walked along the road past some farms
Sun breaking through the clouds
This cute little farm cat was very friendly
Nature Reserve Doode Bemde
River Dijle meandering across the land

We walked through this waterlogged and muddy field!!
Our path was meant to go right through there!!!
Waterlogged land
Dramatic clouds

It was impossible to walk ON the path, we had to cling to the edges!

Another little castle

A lucky escape

After our long walk we were glad to return to the car once more! We drove to the next village and went to have some food in a small inn. I had some salad with my main meal and suddenly I was choking on my food! It was the most terrifying thing that happened to me in a long time, some of the salad leaves got stuck in my throat and cut off my airpipe! Luckily my youngest daughter patted me on the back, quite a few times, before the food got dislogded again and I could breathe! I spent the whole next day thinking how much I was glad to be alive! I was pretty shaken up by this!

Well, this is all for now. I hope you enjoyed the photos and got a bit of inspiration from my latest knits! Perhaps you feel like making some fingerless gloves or a hat? Of course you can crochet those as well! Let me know if you do!!

Feel free to leave your comments, I look forward to reading them!

  4. I am glad that you are OK after the salad attack, I knew that lettuce was dangerous! Seriously, glad that you are OK! Your knits are so lovely, I am amazed at how quickly you work!! 1. Hi Amy! Thanks for your kind comments! I find that currently I seem to be doing more knitting out of necessity (the weather!) and I can knit pretty quickly when the pattern is not too challenging! ;) Yes, it was cold on Sunday, but mostly due to the strong winds!!! Today we went for a day trip to Brussels and thankfully it wasn't too bad after the rain in the morning, it cleared up in the afternoon when we went on an exploring wander around! xx

  5. Lovely views. I love your knitting .I have been making lots of baby hats for my grandson, he was 5lbs at birth and very tiny. The tiny hats in the shop were not small enough so I made one ,within a week he grew. My daughter prefers a snug beanie style hat, a style that doesnt really have room or growth so I have to keep making them .Needless to say I am making one whilst I write this lol.
    Have a lovely day

  8. Your knitted items are really lovely - warm and cosy looking. That looks like a really good walk although it would have been nicer if it wasn't so wet! I'm sure you got a real scare when you got the salad stuck in your throat. I have choked on something I was eating a few times and it is really scary. I dread it happening again!

    1. Thanks, Gillian! I adore that Rico yarn (both Tasai and Chunky), easy to knit with and I love the colours. Sadly Tasai is now discontinued... :(((

The walk was certainly challenging (and my longest/furthest to date for me).

Yes, I have the same dread, so I keep reminding myself to cut up awkward food more/eat more slowly, swallow before talking etc etc. Ironically I said something like that to my oldest daughter the night before when we went out for a meal.... Doh!!!

Anyway, I sincerely hope you will be ok, just eat more carefully.... we still need to have you around so you can inspire us with your amazing makes, Gillian!!! :) xx

  10. Ingrid...how frightening to choke. THat is a horrible feeling! Im so happy relieved, grateful your daughter saved you .LITERALLY. Wow.
Your walk showed the greenest grasses! it is close to zero degrees every day now> Bundling up to go out for an errand is a layering long task. Good for you for getting out and about for a good walk

    1. Thanks, Kathy! I'm glad it ended ok...

Yes, we do have green grass, when we walked through this huge field (the path went right through it), but it was also terribly muddy, as you can see in the photo with the gate!

The last few days we had terrible wind and/or rain! (Luckily no snow or ice!) It was really freezing beginning of December, but now it's a bit milder.

PS: I still got your card up, hehe!!! ;)) xx

  11. G'day Ingrid, I am thankful you had your daughter with you and that you are okay now. Were you having an animated conversation at the time?
I love the rich earthy colours of your woollens and the way the colours blend. What a shame that one is discontinued. I always feel sad when a lovely yarn becomes unavailable. Never mind, an excuse to buy something different and to find a new favourite.
Is your part of the countryside below sea level at all? I am not familiar with Belgium's topography but your photos are teaching me!
Warm wishes to fight off your winter chill
    Jodie xx

    1. Thank you, Jodie! I don't think it is below sea level, but most of the country is very flat (similar to the Netherlands). This is most useful when walking or cycling!!! However, that particular walk was a bit hilly! xx

  12. Hi Ingrid, goodness what a fright for you and your daughter, glad you are OK love.
A lovely walk though, wow there was quite some water around, the farm cat looks like a fluffy version of Mr Enzie, very cute.
You knit so fast, love the wool used for both projects but particularly the fingerless gloves.
Enjoy the rest of your family time.

  14. Hoi!

I went geocaching and left a stitch marker in the cache for fun to puzzle the next person: http://lupeyloops.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/geocrochet.html
I hope that Lizette can understand my broken Dutch!
